Windy Chichester

There's nothing like a bracing walk on the beach for some painting inspiration!

Dodging the showers, Freya and I visited Chichester today and trusting the trusty Sat Nav, put in Chichester Harbour as our destination. Freya's entering a photography competition they're running, so today would be useful for us both. But, little did we realise that Chichester Harbour is a vast area of the south coast and for some reason, Mrs Sat Nav bossily insisted on directing us there via Hayling Island. We ran out of land and to the amusement of the car park attendants we then had to ask for directions, who laughingly informed us that at the end of the island, the only way to Chichester Harbour was through the water (and my little car isn't James Bond equipped) , so we turned back and headed towards Chichester...again.

Weaving through one way systems and narrow, flint clad houses and shops, to my amazement we happened to drive by an old friend of mine. Harry, a fellow PGCE chum from five years ago at Brighton. Shouting his name out of the window, and greeted with a look of astonishment,  we whizzed back round the one way..again..eventually finding a place to stop and talk! Good old Harry gave us sensible directions to Dell Quay and a very pretty (and useful) pub. I even found a 1956 two shilling coin on the mud flats.

hmm.. methinks that the word 'Florin' comes from either...
Latin meaning flower or from a Florentine coin?
But where does the term 'bob' (shilling) come from?

Yeah! What were they indeed? Anything pre 1970 and who knows...! But apparently, a two shilling coin was called a Florin. Do you know why?
